Συντονιστικη Επιτροπη για τη Διασωση του Σαρωνικου/ Coordinating Committee for Saronikos Bay

Saronikos-Athens coast

The Coordinating Committee for Saronikos Bay was created in 1990 and has been active until 2004, with the main goal to protect the coastal areas of Saronikos. It was an ecological movement that managed to bring together people with different political backgrounds and beliefs and gradually gained wide recognition and appeal.

Using a wide range of available means of mobilization (such as demonstrations, happenings, meetings, appeals in the Council of State and in Criminal Justice) it managed to stop the implementation of plans promoting the intensive development and commercialization of the coastal area and thus protected important parts of the Bay, such as the lake of Vouliagmeni, Flisvos and Asteria in Glyfada; the enlisting of the Public Properties Company in the Greek stock market; the construction of the highway junction in Alimos area and the location of projects related to the Olympic games along the Phaleron coastline. At the same time the committee and the broader ecological movement contributed to the creation of new political dynamics in adjacent local municipalities, supporting the election of two majors in the municipalities of Hellenikon and Varkiza.

Today, in the era of the Memorandums between the Greek state and the Troika (IMF, EC, ECB) the privatization and the intensive development of the coast is further promoted. People who participated in the Committee for the Saronikos Bay have already appealed in the Council of State in order to prevent the privatization of the former airport of Hellinikon and of two public marinas. Concluding, one could say that from the ecological movement of the previous decade a new movement has emerged in order to oppose to the privatization of the public property today.
